The work was a commission from the euphonium section of the Otsu Symphonic Band, an amateur band in Shiga Prefecture. It was premiered at the Shiga Prefecture Ensemble Contest held at the Moriyama Citizen Hall on 18 January 2009, and was awarded the silver medal. The piece uses a motif from the work Otsu Symphonic Band played in the wind band competition the previous year (Mantra of the Birds by Eiji Suzuki). Mr. Suzuki’s original is based on Tibetan music, but my challenge was whether I could use the same melody yet transform it into a totally different style of Scottish music. The third and fourth euphonium parts can also be performed on the tuba, so it can be played by a quartet of two euphoniums and two tubas.
